Your Next Vacation: Lake Mead or Lake Mohave?

Lake Mead National Recreation Area is home to two scenic houseboating lakes: Lake Mead and Lake Mohave. Despite their proximity to one another, however, each lake offers a distinctly different houseboating experience. We’ve put together a short overview of each lake to help you determine which one is right for your next houseboat vacation.

Callville Bay Marina at Lake Mead

Lake Mead is one the largest reservoirs in the United States, with four separate basins and over 550 miles of shoreline. This expansive, popular lake offers plenty of open water to explore. With countless coves and beaches, boaters can always find a secluded cove to anchor your houseboat, even during peak season. These coves of Lake Mead also offer excellent fishing opportunities. Lake Mead is known for its abundance of large striped bass. With occasional catches weighing in at over 40 pounds, avid anglers will enjoy fantastic fishing at Lake Mead. In addition to stripers, other sport fish in Lake Mead include rainbow trout, crappie, channel catfish, tilapia, and largemouth black bass.

Cottonwood Cove Marina at Lake Mohave

Smaller and lesser known than Lake Mead, Lake Mohave is a hidden gem in the American Southwest. Lake Mohave is the ideal location for a serene, leisurely houseboat vacation. The steep walls of the Black Canyon, located at the northern end of the lake, are breathtakingly beautiful. In addition to the geological scenery, Lake Mohave offers the opportunity to observe some of the wildlife of the Colorado River Valley. Desert bighorn sheep, herons, egrets, and even bald eagles are commonly sighted along the shores and in the two wilderness areas just north of Cottonwood Cove.
